The supervision of our book processing is under the cataloging unit within the
Technical Services Department. Although many of the items being processed are
serials, the decision was made to continue to keep the book processing function
in cataloging as it was the natural link to the assignment of call numbers for
monographs which require full processing. In contrast, many of our serials (reporter volumes,
for example) are not fully processed with call number, etc. and require less work.
However, with the library moving into an automated environment with the III
system, we may need to re-visit this issue and adjust to the new procedures that
automation will bring.
