We are a law firm of about 140 attorneys spread out over 3 cities. We
take reference questions the same way no matter how they show up at our
"door." I am firmly committed to electronic dissemination of information
and send out many emails myself to the firm at large on a variety of
issues. Usually emails requesting service come to my mailbox (I am the
senior librarian in this office), but I and my staff of 1 and 1/2 share
the work, each according to our ability. An email reference question is
not necessarily one that demands priority - one in person or by telephone
might be, but part of our reference interview asks "what is your
deadline?" We don't sit at the terminal all day waiting for email so if
someone is in a hurry, they can call us to tell us there's an
email from them in our box. I often answer reference
questions by email and send text results the same way. This is especially
handy for attorneys in different cities from my own. They can print out
the results immediately and not wait for something to arrive overnight.
Hope this helps!
