e-mail reference questions

I have the feeling that this may have been raised previously, but I
didn't find it in the archives, so here goes what may be a repeat
question:

We are in the proccess of trying to develop a policy on how to respond to
e-mailed reference questions. We anticipate that these requests will
come from faculty. Various proposals have been aired ranging from treat
them as super-urgent requests, to treat them the same as regular mailed
requests, to not even accepting such requests.

We imagine that others of you have wrestled with this question and would
very much appreciate hearing how you have handled it.
   Do you take these requests?
Does one person handle all requests? Is that how you handle other
forms of requests?
What priority do you give them?
Please answer any questions that I haven't specifically asked but
which YOU feel are pertinent.
   etc., etc., etc.,

If pertient to the answer you may want to include any info on staffing
and the impact on the same.

Thanks,
Dan Taysom
