Looseleafs

Some of us were recently talking about buying looseleafs and not updating
them, but treating them as though they were bound un-supplemented
monographs.
I think that it is an interesting philosophical question whether to buy
something that has as a predominant feature the ability to be updated in
order to give patrons current, accurate information, but then not spend
the money to update it. In a way, it sort of defeats the fundamental
purpose of the service, goes contrary to its nature, and damages the
integrity of your collection. However, if the point is to simply treat
it like a bound volume, you may as well send it out to the bindery and
spare yourself and your patrons the inconvenience of the binders and save
space on your shelves.
I personally think that I owe my patrons a responsibility to keep the best
and most up to date resources available.
