Retention of out-of-date looseleafs

Greetings,
We are in the process of a collection review here at
Missouri-Columbia. As part of that review, we have and will be
cancelling some looseleaf titles from various publishers.
My question concerns the retention of these materials. I
have always labored under the belief that a supplemented treatise
can, in effect, become a monograph if the supplementation is
stopped. On the other hand, a cancelled looseleaf service has
little or no research value and should be withdrawn.
I would sincerely appreciate any thoughts my collegues
may have on the subject.
