        LAW REFERENCE LIBRARIAN/COMPUTER-ASSISTED LEGAL RESEARCH
                                INSTRUCTOR

The University of Western Ontario Library System invites applications
for the four year contract (renewable) position of Law Reference
Librarian/Computer-Assisted Legal Research Instructor.

The UWO Library System is one of the largest in Canada, with a
collection of approximately 2 million catalogued volumes and more than
3.6 million items in other formats. Through its seven libraries the
Library System provides support for a broad range of undergraduate,
graduate, amd professional programs.

The Law Library, with a collection of approximately 200,000 volumes,
is housed in the same building as the Faculty of Law. From this
location the seven library staff emembers provide a broad range of
information and circulation services. Currently, the Faculty enrols
apporximately 470 full-time students in the three-year program with a
full-time faculty complement of 30.

Reporting to the Head of the Law Library, the successful applicant is
responsible primarily for the provision of general reference and
information service to the Law Library's clientele and for introducing
and expanding CALR instruction in the Faculty through formal courses
and special training. Combining both these areas of responsibility
the incumbent will be responsible for providing tutoirials to
individual students and faculty members, as well as designing and
implementing on-line instructional aids. In addition, the incumbent
ensures that the Faculty's Computer Lab functions effectively as a
CALR centre.

The required qualifications for this position include: an
ALA-accredited MLS degree or equivalent as determined by a
professional association; an LLB (and, preferably, a call to a
Provincial Bar); library experience in a public service position,
preferably in an academic law library; demonstrated successful
experience in teaching legal concepts and research methodologies;
detailed hands-on knowledge of legal databases including QL, Canadian
Law Online, Westlaw, Lexis-Nexis, etc.; excellent computer literacy
skills; knowledge of and experience in the use of Internet resources;
and excellent and well-established communication skills.

In addition, it is expected that the incumbent will be well-versed in
developing CALR instructional materials as well as thoroughly familiar
with accessing and using large-scale automated library systems.
Preferably, the candidates law library experience will have been in
positions with a significant public service component. Some shift
work is required.
