Why privatelawlib-l?

I created privatelawlib-l primarily to provide a forum for private law
librarians to discuss issues unique to their needs. We academics often
take for granted the computer resources we have at our disposal (like
listserv software) and I wanted to create a window of opportunity
for privates to use this same tool. As an aside, I have already
heard from some court folks who would like their own list.
...and if it helps them...whatever..I'm easy...

We internet junkies take for granted the benefits of a list:

1) its an effective consensus builder for the group.
2) it is a power tool giving more authority and credibility
to its users because they can speak as one.
3) is a very practical "problem solver" for the groups unique needs
4) it provides marketing/brain storm/idea type abilities
5) it is an effective publishing medium-electronic law journal/reporter
6) it facilitates co-authorship of written work and technology
5)....I'm sure someone could rattle off more....

...but I digress...

Many private law librarians are just now (in the last year) joining internet.

My intention is to give them a foot-hold, where they can:

1) learn about internet
2) more importantly, understand and facilitate solutions making for unique needs
yet to be identified by the new list.

There are lots of details <that someone has to attend to> to make everything
work on internet for everybody. Listservs do this. They come and go to meet
the need.

And besides, private libs, along with all of us, can continue with lawlib....

It is, after all, the Grandmother/father of all this.

You have to understand...Private Law Librarians come to
internet under different circumstances than most of us..These librarians have to
scrape together funds to get to internet in the first place...Many are new
users.......They have unique problems getting to "gopher" resources because they
are "coming in" by commercial vendors of access......They often have
terrible terminal emulation problems just to see all this stuff we are so
merrily loading on internet...

This list aims to facilitate their success on internet. Thats all..

If it helps them, then there is nothing to lose....If it fails, then it just
fades because it wasn't needed. Thats ok too....

...long winded after all....hmmm

mark

...please excuse my typing....I am writing this at home on an old tandy
with no functional back-space...man..you try to get it right the first time...

PS. I don't understand why everyone would join every list? Am I missing
something? Join the lists that help you in your job I say....
