BACKGROUND: The Gallagher Law Library at the University of Washington
is part of a large, busy academic law school serving 50 faculty, 500 J.D.
students, and 50 LLM students, as well as the bar and general public. In
addition, it manages an internship program for library science students
preparing for professional careers in law librarianship. The Law Library
is independent of, but closely related to, the library system of the main
campus of the University of Washington, and has recently joined in
developing a highly-regarded online bibliographic system. Graduate
programs are heavily oriented towards international, foreign and
comparative law, including an Asian Law program. The Law Library
supports the Pacific Rim Law and Policy Journal, as well as the
Washington Law Review. The law school is located at the west end of the
University's campus, close to Portage Bay, and it is a quick trip to
downtown Seattle. The collection includes close to 450,000 volumes,
including selective depository items. The law school is beginning the
planning process for a new and renovated building, and librarians are
heavily involved in that process.
GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Reference Librarian 1 FTE
Within the Public Services Department, serves as one of three
fulltime Reference Librarians assisting students, faculty and other
library patrons. Provides research instruction to students, and provides
in-depth research for faculty. This team position provides manmy
opportunities for creativity and professional development. We look
forward to working with an individual who is a self-starter with a sense
of humor, who enjoys collaborating on a wide variety of projects.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
1. Provides reference service to library patrons, including general and
legal reference, using traditional book sources as well as computerized
systems (WESTLAW, LEXIS, DIALOG, WLN, RLIN) and the Internet.
2. Instructs law students on computerized systems.
3. Prepares course material for and teaches legal bibliography/
research courses as requested for Basic Legal Skills and other law school
courses.
4. Continually improves reference and research skills for
high-quality service.
5. Performs in-depth research for faculty, using computerized and
other resources.
6. Some weekend or evening hours may be required.
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Master's in librarianship from an ALA-accredited library school
required.
2. Substantial law library reference experience required.
3. Excellent legal research skills required -- manual and online.
4. Excellent communication skills which foster effective working
relationships with staff and with faculty, students and other library
users are necessary.
5. Demonstrated teaching ability desirable.
6. J.D. or additional library experience desirable.
7. Writing and editing skills desirable.

Librarians are academic personnel and participate in TIAA-CREFF
retirement program on a matching basis. Vacation is accrued at the rate
of 24 working days per year, sick leave at the rate of 12 working days
