Here at BYU Law Library, we have received an offer from
Matthew Bender which has made me curious about whether others have
received similar offers and, if so, how they have viewed it and
what they have done about it.
Matthew Bender has offered free CD's of many of their
publication. If we subscribe to one of those titles (and we
subscribe to many of they) we can receive the CD for free provided
it is available only on a single CD drive. However, if we put it
on our network it would cost $60 - 80 for each potential
simultaneous user. We have over 80 terminal with access to the
network as well as dial-in modem users (little hard to determine
just how many could conceivably use the system at any given time).
That could put our cost at well over $5000 per title. In reality,
it would be rare that more than one or two users would attempt to
access a title at the same time. That makes the price a bit steep.
Have others faced this problem? How have you resolved it?
If you respond to me directly I will summarize for the list.
