Compact Shelving

Thanks to all who answered my plea. It was requested that I summarize
for the list.
First, everyone preferred mechanical over motorized shelving.
As to handicapped access, library staff assists in retrieving books
if needed. Apparently, newer compact shelving can be accessed by
patrons in wheelchairs. The mechanism to move the ranges can be
reached from a sitting position.

Recommended vendors: Space Saver, Montel, Advance Mfg., Elecompact,
Magic Aisle

What do people keep in compact shelving?
Old CFRs, earlier editions, superceded state statutes, foreign & UK
materials (a Canadian library keeps US materials), Gov Docs, Records &
briefs, Serial Set, older journals (pre-1980, pre CD-ROM index). It was
also pointed out that patrons generally do not browse in journal collec-
tions, which make them reasonable to put in compact shelving
