----------------------------Original message----------------------------
Hello everyone....hopefully, everyone enjoyed the holiday weekend.
To those of you who responded to my requests for participants to
assist me with my study on BI programs, I want you to know that I am
awaiting the approval of my research proposal which was submitted to
the advising committee last Friday.
As soon as all the formalities are finalized, I will send each
of you a detailed description of the study as well as all the necessary
information. Once again, my plan is to do a comprehensive comparitive
analysis of 100+ BI programs in academic libraries. With the data I
collect, I am going to formulate a theoretical "model" that can be
applied/used toward an already existing program or as an evaluative
tool to assist librarians who teach BI.
I do plan to keep everyone on the list updated with my research,
and if anyone else is interested in participating in this project,
please contact me at:
mhricko@kentvm.kent.edu
I have not established a closing date for participants just yet. I
will do that after the committee completes the review of my proposal.
Thanks again to those of you who agreed to participate. I am looking
foward to working with all of you in the coming month.
Best regards, Mary

You might want to check out what I refer to as the "clearinghouse
for course-related web pages" at UTexas/Austin. It's a collection
of professor-produced course specific web pages from *all* over.

Hello,
I am a mls student at SUNY Buffalo and I am doing a policy paper
on bi and cd roms in academic libraries. I was wondering if some of you
could share your experiences when you developed bi programs for cd roms
in your libraries. I'd like to know what kind of problems you
encountered and how you dealt with them or are dealing with them presently.
You may reply directly to me at V132j6sj@ubvms.cc.buffalo.edu. Thank you
in advance for your help. Patty Curthoys

In response to Kristin Jacobsen's question about examples of how faculty
are using the Internet in their classes, I found the following
Web page, though have not had a chance to check it out:
The World Lecture Hall
http://wwwhost.cc.utexas.edu/world/instruction/index.html
>From the description, it sounds like it consists of lots of examples of how
faculty are using the Internet (or at least the Web) in teaching.

Here at the University of Washington we've begun planning for the 1996
Loex of the West conference. I'm interested in your thoughts and
opinions concerning the dates and possible topics.
1. We're tentatively scheduled for June 21 & 22 (Friday & Saturday),
1996. ALA is scheduled for July 4-10 in NYC. Are there
any other BI-type conferences planned for June/July 1996? Would
a date during the first week of August be a better time?
2. We have yet to set a topic for the conference. Please let me
know what topics would interest you. We are considering having
an electronic poster session--librarians would show how they've
used the Web for instructional/reference purposes.
Thank you for all your comments. Please send them, and any other advice
you can offer a neophyte conference planner, directly to me at
tme@u.washington.edu.
Thank you.

Subject: OPAC and Internet BI
----------------------------Original message----------------------------
Greetings,
This is my first posting to the list so if this issue
has already been discussed, please refer me to the appropriate
source. Our library will bring up our OPAC this summer and
establish an Internet connection. I realize that these
"events" will greatly change the way we do bibliographic
instruction. I am interested in any guides, handouts, training
manuals or suggestions on how to include instruction for the
OPAC and Internet in our BI program. We will be doing classes
for students (primarily through English 101), faculty and
staff. If you are willing to share any ideas, please respond
directly to me not the list.
Thanks for the help,

----------------------------Original message----------------------------
I came to the profession with a master's degree in education and a couple
of years of teaching experience. While there is still a lot to learn on
the job, my background in education has helped me in several ways.
Understanding learning theories has enabled me to select a variety of
methods to fit a particular situation. Plannning the entire program is
easier with a knowledge of goals and objectives. Just having experience
in how teaching a class diiffers from giving a presentation is helpful.
Finally, I believe I have more credibility with faculty than I would
otherwise. I can talk their language. When we cooperatively plan for
BI, we discuss active learning and outcomes. I become a teaching
partner.
The plea for a theory of BI that I heard in library school puzzled me.
Let's build on what has been done in education. From those theories, we
can develop some models of BI. This is what other disciplines have done.
Why don't we?

Does anyone know of a good video how-to for ERIC or CINAHL (SilverPlatter
versions)? We have the APA video on PsycLIT, and are looking for something
of that calibre on other heavily-used databases.
