According to my copy of _Popeye_the_Sailor_ (N.Y. : Nostalgia
Press, c1971), which contains strips "reprinted just as they originally appeared
in the daily newspapers of 1936", Popeye says on several occasions:

                I YAM WHAT I YAM AN' THA'S ALL I YAM!
