One way to combat outsourcing is information. What are the projected
savings that these consultants are saying will be realized by such a firm
as B&M outsourcing their library? Are these savings realistic? Is there
any survey that has been performed using actual examples of outsourced
libraries and the savings realized? I feel that the consultants are
feeding firms a bunch of bull. AALL needs a mediator who can be
available to firms having financial troubles. This mediator should be
equipped with hardcore data on making libraries run more
cost-effectively and examples of how outsourcing has worked in similar
situations. If that doesn't work, look on the bright side--CONTRACTORS
ARE NOT CHEAP--THEIR CONTRACT PRICE USUALLY INCREASES ANNUALLY WITH THE
RENEWAL OF THE CONTRACT.
