This is a reminder posted to Law-Lib and Int-law & Euro-lex (by
Marilyn Raisch); excuse the duplication. We are trying to reach as
many members as possible with Institute news. Please pass the word!!
The application deadline for the 1994 AALL Institutes was extended to
April 20, 1994. Applications were included in the Annual Meeting
mailing. Forms may be faxed to AALL, attn Phyllis Fahrer. (Fax
312-431-1097; Voice 312-939-4764). Phyllis can also answer general
questions about the application process; questions about course content should
be directed to the appropriate Institute co-chairs (listed below).
1. Basic Legal Reference Services, July 5-8, 1994, Portland, Oregon.
Registration fee: $425.
The Institute will address the art of reference, as well as reference
sources, because -- as librarians on the front line know -- there is much
more to reference than knowing how to construct a search or when to check
the New Developments section of a looseleaf. Effective reference service
begins with the interaction between patron and librarian; it requires
professional judgment, knowledge of the resources available, and the
ability to tailor the response to the needs of the individual patron.
The Institute will include discussion of essential and specialized print
sources as well as managing electronic resources and the Internet.
Institute co-chairs are Aleta Benjamin (714-669-6965) and Mary Hotchkiss
(206-553-4475).
2. Transnational Legal Transactions, July 5-8, 1994, University of
Washington, Seattle, Washington. Registration fee: $400.
This Institute is the third in a series: training the next generation of
foreign and international law librarians. This Institute will cover
private international law topics including: civil, commercial, and
criminal litigation; choice of law; family law; property and inheritance
law; the concept of "Lex Mercatoria"; intellectual property;
environmental law; arbitration; and unification and model law conventions.
Each topic will include a lecture on the substantive aspects of the law
followed by a review of resources covering the topic.
Institute co-chairs are Marylin Raisch (212-854-1411) and Roberta Shaffer
(202-662-6152).
PLEASE CONSIDER ATTENDING ONE OF THE 1994 INSTITUTES. THESE SMALL GROUP
LEARNING EXPERIENCES ARE RENOWNED FOR BOTH THEIR CONTENT & COLLEGIALITY!
