My library uses a lot of student help, with all the normal problems
attached -- lack of consistency, students quitting because they
get clerking positions half way through the semester, etc. We are
considering hiring a "Reference Assistant" who could help the
Reference librarians with clerical duties, watch over the Lexis
or Westlaw terminals when the vendor's employees are not around, and
so forth. Can any of you advise me as to the pro's and con's of
hiring a non-student in a position like this? Who has made this
kind of a move? What has your experience been like?
