Washburn University School of Law Library is pleased to announce
the availability of an electronic discussion list intended to serve
the needs of directors of U.S. law school libraries (or their
designated representatives):

LAWLIBDIR-L

The list has the following objectives (as initially envisioned by
the listowners):

(1) Serve as an information dissemination vehicle for those who
have a legitimate need to reach directors (e.g., AALS Committee on
Dean-Director Workshop, AALS Section on Libraries, AALS Committee
on Libraries, ABA Consultant on Legal Education, AALL Executive
Board, AALL Academic Libraries SIS, AALL Law School Library
Directors Meeting).

(2) Provide a forum for the discussion of issues of mutual concern
or interest. After several weeks, to give an opportunity for
directors to subscribe, the listowners will review the subscribers
list and remove the names of any who are not law school library
directors (or their authorized representatives). While this
"closed forum" format may encourage participants to speak freely,
no guarantee of confidentiality can be given.

(3) Perform a "filtering function" for lawlib. Some directors may
wish to unsubscribe or postpone mail from lawlib if they have the
assurance that "significant" posts will be forwarded to
lawlibdir-l. The intention would be to filter out reference
queries, needs & offers of materials, repetitious responses,
subscribe/unsubscribe messages, thank yous, etc. Messages would be
forwarded at least daily. (This function will not be activated for
several weeks to give directors an opportunity to subscribe to
lawlibdir-l, discuss the utility of this feature, and make a
decision.)

Lawlibdir-l will probably be a low volume list. That, of course,
will depend on the participants. Since all but a few law school
library directors have Internet or Internet-accessible email
addresses, the potential exists to make this list an effective
distribution vehicle, a helpful forum, and a time saver for
monitoring lawlib.

Note: After you have subscribed to lawlibdir-l, John Christensen
will send you the first version of "Law School Library Directors
Internet Email Directory". Please check your entry and let him know
of any changes that should be made. This should be a handy tool to
facilitate email communications with other directors on a
one-to-one basis. The intention is to maintain this directory on
an ongoing basis and distribute it monthly via the list.

An Overview:

Listservs are electronic mail based "discussion groups",
conducted using Internet e-mail, where members can
freely exchange ideas across great distances. There are many
listservs on Internet.

E-mail users join a listserv by executing a command from within
their own email system, and then sending a special message to a listserv
address. Users join "lists" that interest them.

Once a user has joined a list, he or she may send a message to
the entire group.

It has become apparent that listservs facilitate education
of users, as well as promote development of the subject/topic of
the listserv itself. As indicated above, information of interest to law school
library directors may be posted to lawlibdir-l.

Two individuals watch over the listserv and are called List-owners:

Listowners are:

            John Christensen, zzchri@acc.wuacc.edu
Director, Washburn University School of Law Library

            Mark Folmsbee, zzfolm@acc.wuacc.edu
Associate Director, Washburn University School of Law Library

To join the list and receive email from the group, send an email message to
listserv@acc.wuacc.edu with the body of the message saying:

          subscribe lawlibdir-l your firstname lastname

          [EXAMPLE: subscribe lawlibdir-l john christensen]

By sending this message, the computer automatically adds you to the listserv.
You should receive a confirmation message at your email address within about
five minutes of your subscription. You will also receive a message describing a
password. For the moment, simply ignore that message (it is used in advanced
listserv functions).

You will begin receiving messages as soon as others join the listserv.

To send a message to the list that you want everyone to see, send the message to
lawlibdir-l@acc.wuacc.edu. The computer will forward the message to
everyone who has joined.

TO UNSUBSCRIBE, send a message to listserv@acc.wuacc.edu with the body
containing the command:

          unsubscribe lawlibdir-l

HINTS:

For technical information concerning the listserv, send a command to
listserv@acc.wuacc.edu with the body containing the word: help
You will be directed to a topic list of commands.
