"Take Your Daughter to Work Day" is a national program sponsored by the MS.
Foundation. It will be celebrated this year on April 28. As in the past, the
event is designed to allow young girls (the recommended age level is 9 to 15)
a chance at seeing a slice of the work force that they will be joining some
day and hopefully to spark in them a sense of the vast possibilities of their
futures.
Mothers, fathers, and other adults bring these girls to the work place in a
wide variety of settings--putting them behind cash registers, computers, and
control panels to boost their self-confidence and enthusiasm about their
choices in life.
Not only is this an important activity for all the participants--daughters and
parents alike--it is also a golden public relations opportunity for the
library profession. Here's your chance to tell the librarians' side of the
story, to instill in a young person a better understanding of the important,
challenging, and exciting role we play in today's information-dominated
society. Wanting to "grow up and be a librarian" doesn't just happen, we all
must work to insure that our profession stands on an equal footing with other
groups in the minds of the potential librarians of the 21st century. So join
in the nationally celebrated "Take Your Daughter to Work Day" on April
28--make it happen! (And tell me, Frank Houdek, AALL Public Relations
Coordinator, what you did so that I may share the efforts of our members
through the AALL Newsletter "P.R. Potpourri" column. Contact information
