I always try to budget for continuations and, having done a study of the proble
m when I was an intern at the Yale Law Library, I have come up with a rough and
ready formula for doing it. I take one quarter of the prior year's expenditur
es for treatises and texts and add it to my continuations budget this year. Th
is has worked pretty well and has gotten no complaints from administrators. I
do think that a new study would probably be appropriate however. It is possibl
e that the 25% I budget for is too high.
