Federal document depository concerns

Greetings Documents Librarians and other knowledgeable folk:

In the past and up until June 30 of this year, our law library
has had a very nice relationship re Federal government documents
with our university's general library. We are not a depository
but they are. They selected items that we cataloged and shelved
in our collection, such as CFR, Patent Gazette, etc. This
arrangement was accepted by the GPO because among other reasons
we share space in the same building although we are totally
separate administratively. The university's general library has
notified us that this relationship will end as of the end of the
fiscal year.

I need some information on the pros and cons of 1.) having our
library become its own depository, 2.) having our library
purchase those documents that we need, from the Feds. or somebody
else, or 3.) some other way to get what we need. I need to know
things such as the following: 1.) what staffing over and above
the regular acquisitions staff does it take to run even a minimal
depository operation, 2.) is there a minimum percentage of all
depository items that a depository must take to get depository
status, 3.) how choosy can a depository be, i.e., must we choose
groups of material rather than specific titles, 4.) if we go the
purchase route, from whom should we purchase, and 5.) other
ramifications of our possible choices.

Feel free to respond to me by whatever means with which you are
most comfortable. If your respond via e-mail, I leave the choice
of responding directly to me or to the list to your best
judgment.

Thanks
