UN Readex Documents

We subscribe to the Readex CD-ROM and microfiche for the U.N. Law
Collection and Human Rights segment. The microfiche are currently
filed by Readex year and document number. Our Documents Assistant wants to
refile all these fiche by United Nations document numbers and then by
the year contained in the United Nations document numbers in order to
make them easier to locate.

Readex has given me two reasons for retaining their method of
organization. 1) The fiche, checklist, and CD-ROM are intended to
act as a finding system. The CD gives access by subject. The
checklist gives access by Readex year and number and a complete record
of holdings. They are interdependent. If you file the fiche by
United Nations document number, you will not be able to use the
checklist to access documents or as a record of holdings. 2)
Sometimes there is more than one document on a fiche. If they are
filed by United Nations document number, it would be more difficult to
find the second document on a fiche.

I am skeptical of what vendors tell me so I would like those of
you who have experience with this issue and no relationship with
Readex to contact me with a clear explanation of the reasons for and
against each approach. Please respond to my Bitnet or Internet
address.
