Thought many on this list would be interested in this message from another
list, concerning Mead Data's cancellation of a contract with a non-law school
educational institution.

>Lexis/Nexis has cancelled Virginia Tech's contract which provided for the
>full range of their services at a steeply discounted educational rate. I
>am not a lawyer, do not know all the particulars of our situation, and do
>not want to get drawn into issues of interpretation. For the benefit of my
>counterparts in other institutions, I would say that we found the service
>invaluable while we had it and will miss it badly. I would advise you to
>make sure that your colleagues understand how jealously Lexis/Nexis prizes
>and guards their product. It appears that Lexis emphasizes their
>availability for the instructional mission of your university, but does not
>very much welcome the use of the product in support of research not having
>an immediate, hand-in-glove relationship to instruction. Use for other
>purposes, e.g. for agencies relating to the business end of the university,
>is of course totally forbidden.
>
>Having discharged my responsibility to warn others, let me ask a few
>questions of colleagues who might be able to help us. Has anyone else been
>cancelled? If so, were you able to negotiate the cessation date, for
>example to the end of current semester? Has anyone been allowed a second
>chance after having sat in the penalty box for six months?
>
>Many thanks. The listserv is invaluable at a time like this (uh oh, Lynn,
>don't cancel us!).
