I was going to reply to C. Snyder's question about the Hitchhiker's Guide from
the perspective of a librarian, but I think Heather Simmons did an ok job, with
out belaboring the point. I was also going to refresh my memory on this
topic, but all available copies are checked out or with my daughter in
Birmingham. Suffice it to say that this is one of few books that actually
mentions some reference sources (the Hitchhiker's Guide itself and the Ultra-
Complete Meximegalon Dictionary of Every Language, for example) as part of the
narrative.
We can continue this off the list, if you like.
