Terminal emulation and Cornell gopher

(duplicate posting to TEKNOIDS and LAW-LIB)
Folks:

Over the last few months some of you who are using VAXen to access the
LII Gopher via telnet have complained that the Gopher server rejects
your overtures somewhat abruptly. I was not able to provide you with
much guidance, since I don't normally have access to a VAX (and,
incidentally, regard working in VMS as the computer analog to shock incarceration)

A solution has arrived. Once you have fired up telnet on the VAX and
are seeing the TELNET> prompt, say:
   SET TERMINAL/DEVICE_TYPE = VT100

This should do it. Our thanks to Bill Ramsey of Neal&Harwell for the
tip.

Regards,

Tb.
