Our lexis usage increased by several hundred percent this year while our
westlaw usage increased less than 10 percent. Certainly NEXIS is one
answer but I have serious doubts if that is the only reason. I wonder
if there isn't a differnce in how usage is maintained by the two vendors.
For example, does lexis count off-line printing (i.e., print doc or print
all) in its usage statistics? Does westlaw count these hours? For those
libraries that are billed in the private sector at a 1.5x rate, how do the
companies count usage of these libraries by academic law libraries. Frankly,
to the extent these things are important, perhaps it would be worthwhile
for the ABA to come up with a definition of how to count CALR usage. I'm
not sure these usage stats are terribly important except to the extent of
deciding how to apportion resources.
