RE: library security systems

Hello Claudia! If you remember, Tulsa has a 3-M system. It's about 8 years old
now. We have had recurring problems during all of that time, and see no hope
of a change. Considering our physical facility, the system does a fairly good
job. Problems: because of the location and proximity to CRTs of various makes,
models and ages; the effective field of the system only covers 75% of the exit
area--on a good day!! Make sure and ask ALL vendors about proximity problems to
other electronic and/or radio wave equipment! Also, no system I've seen can
manage binders with connected metal in them. None of our loose-leaf or acco
binders will set off the system. One problem we also have is backpacks on
patrons. Taller patrons with books in the top of their packs can walk right
out.
Sounds funny, but it's true. Also the angle at which people carry materials
will cause the system to respond--or not. If you're in Columbia for MAALL, we
can talk further. TTFN! Katherine Tooley @ Tulsa.
